Your bike on the bench, step by step
A cargo bike does not wear like a town bike. The weight sits on the front, often over a small wheel, and the brakes do twice the work stopping a loaded box. Pads, headsets and steering parts go faster than people expect, and they go quietly, so most of what I find on the stand the rider never felt.

Seven steps
One standard service
What 1,295 kr plus parts buys on a two-wheel box bike or long-tail. The board says 5 working days this week. It is usually 4 to 7.

02Wash
Wash and inspect
Washed down so cracks, rust and worn parts can be seen, then the frame, the welds and the box mounts are gone over by eye and by hand.

03Drive
Drivetrain
Chain wear measured, cassette and chainring checked, gears indexed and hub gears adjusted where fitted. Worn parts are charged on top of the service.

04Brakes
Brakes and the extra load they carry
Pads, rotors and cables or hoses checked, adjusted, bled or replaced. A loaded box bike asks twice as much of its brakes, so they get the longest look of anything on the bike.

05Steer
Steering and box hardware
Headset, steering rod or linkage, the stand and every bolt that holds the box to the frame checked and torqued against its mark.

06Motor
Motor and battery read-out
The motor's error log and the battery's health are read out and written on your ticket. If something is wrong, it goes to diagnosis at 595 kr, deducted from the repair if we do it.

07Test
A test ride with 40 kg aboard
Ridden round the block with a 40 kg sandbag in the box, because a bike that is quiet empty can still knock under load. Only then does it go on the board for collection.

What the bench costs
Labour prices for the work, with parts charged on top where marked. A booked safety check is done the same day if the bike is in by 12:00.

From stand three
The job I am proudest of
A flower seller's three-wheeler came in at the end of a winter of salted roads. It had worked straight through the cold, and by the time it reached us every bearing on it was seized.
It went up on stand three and came down to the bare frame. Over four days it got new bearings throughout, a new tilt linkage, and a new box floor cut from marine ply to replace the one the slush had got into.
Since then it has been back only for its standard service. I still recognise it by the sound of it coming round the corner, before I see it.

Trade fleet plan
Mondays belong to the fleets

Per bike, per month
About a third of the bench is trade riders who cannot afford a day off the road. The plan puts each bike on a fixed rhythm, so wear is found on the stand on a Monday and not halfway through a delivery. If a fleet bike has to stay on the stand, trade hire covers it from 520 kr a day.
Every bike on the plan gets

- Bench time on Mondays, when the shop is closed to walk-ins

Turned down at the bench
Work we turn away
- Derestricting motors No motor that leaves this bench will assist past 25 km/h. A loaded box bike needs far more road to stop than most riders expect.
- Cell-level battery rebuilds We diagnose the pack and send it to a specialist who rebuilds them.
- Bikes without proof of ownership No work without proof the bike is yours, and no second-hand bike bought in without a receipt or a frame-number match.
- E-scooters and throttle-only drives E-scooters, mopeds and anything driven by a throttle alone go elsewhere. The bench is for bikes you pedal.
